Bacon Day

Let’s gather around and celebrate National Bacon Day on this merry date. It’s a special day for those that can never say no to bacon. Of course, that includes me.

Bacon is a cut of pork that has salt-cured. Moreover, it can be made from several cuts of meat from pork belly or back cuts. The curing and smoking of the meat strip give it it’s crispy and yet, at the same time, chewy texture.

History of Bacon

Bacon was initially made with cuts of pork. However, in a Muslim or Jewish country where pork is forbidden to eat, pork is substituted with other meat like chicken, cow, mutton, goat and lamb. The different types of meat can be made into the perfect cut for bacon.

Bacon existed and was enjoyed by the Ancient Romans. The bacon was called petaso, at the time. Petaso is a pig shoulder that is boiled with dried figs. During the Medieval Era, bacon and its fat are essential ingredients for cooking among the Anglo Saxon peasants.

The word bacon may be derived from the French word ‘bako’, the Germanic word ‘bakkon’ or the Teutonic term ‘backe’ which refers to the back of the pig before the 12th century. In the 16th century, any pork was regarded as ‘bacoun.’

It was in the 17th century that the word bacon is used to refer to the salted and smoked pork slice that we know today.

Types of Bacon

Bacon can be varied differently according to its cut of meat, the method of cooking, or the amount of fat it has. Listed are different types of bacon we have, according to its region;

The original bacon, the long narrow strips of pork belly is thin-sliced and cooked to be crispy and chewy.

The Canadian bacon is made of pork-loin. It is served in thicker and round slices. It contains less fat and grease.

Similar to the American-style bacon, this bacon is made of pork belly. It can be thinly sliced bacon or sold in small, cube sizes.
