Who doesn’t love a good basket of crunchy tostada chips and fresh salsa? It’s a good snack when you are just hanging out with friends or watching a movie at home. Better yet, bottomless chips? Count me in!

What are Bottomless Tostada Chips and Salsa

In order to understand what this dish is all about, there are 3 elements that you have to understand – bottomless, tostada chips and salsa.

Bottomless simply means that when you run out of chips, you may request for refills at the restaurant to your heart’s content!

Tostada chips are tortilla chips. They are made out of corn tortillas that are fried or baked and they are usually cut into a triangle shape. Corn tortillas are made of corn, salt, water and vegetable oil.

Salsa in Spanish basically means sauce. The salsa we know today is usually made of thinly-diced fresh tomatoes, cilantro, onions, bell peppers, jalapeño peppers, lime juice, cumin and salt.

Combine the key components together, and you get crunchy, baked tortilla chips dipped in fresh, zesty salsa that never ends!

How did Bottomless Tostada Chips and Salsa started?

Tostada chips are native to the Mexicans. In Latin America, they are known as tortilla chips, which are tostada chips that are not baked and are commonly served by house owners for entertaining guests. The Latin American’s eventually brought their traditions with them when they move to America – Texas, to be exact.

While tostada chips were already widely available in the United States since the 1800s, Salsa only made its mark as the perfect dipping to be paired with tostada chips in the 1900s. Yes, how can one imagine a world where tostada chips are eaten without salsa.

Here is where it gets interesting. Eventually, it was Texas who helped bring tostada chips and salsa together. Brands like El Paso Chile Company introduced salsa to America and more companies started jumping on the salsa bandwagon. The sensation grew to be so big that eventually salsa became a staple in the common American household – beating the ketchup.

So how did tostada chips and salsa became such as well-loved dish? Well, this is because of the increase in Hispanic population in the United States which inherently, caused an increase in the demand of tortilla chips and salsa. In 2003, tostada chips and salsa became the official snack for the state of Texas and today, it is enjoyed by everyone around the world in different varations such as gluten-free tortilla chips, salsa and guacamole and even the extra hot Tex-Mex Salsa.

The Trick to a Good Salsa

Tostada chips are easy to make – if you don’t have the time to make one, you can definitely buy one from your local supermarket. Note that the best tostada chips are not seasoned. However, the key to a good salsa is fresh ingredients and by serving it almost immediately.

If you want to make a good salsa dip you must first have the following ingredients – finely diced fresh tomatoes with their seeds removed, finely diced red onions, finely diced jalapeño with their seeds removed (or you can leave it on if you want an extra kick), one small clove of garlic that is minced, finely chopped fresh cilantro, a squeeze of lime juice and some cumin and salt to taste.
