Bulgogi dish itself is said to have existed since the Goguryeo era around 37 BCE and 668 CE. The recipe was initially called Maekjeok, and it was first done by grilling the beef on skewers.
During the Joseon Dynasty, the dish was given the name “neobiani,” to describe the cooking method of grilling thin meat. At the time, neobiani was a dish prepared for the royalty and the nobles. As time passed, the recipe changed names several times before finally getting the name bulgogi as it is called today.
In the modern world, bulgogi combined with dishes from other cultures is more common than you think. In fact, many restaurants in Korea commonly have bulgogi burger on their menu.
