Dish of the Day: Chocolate Fudge

Imagine a square-shaped chocolate block that looks sturdy on the outside, but melts in your mouth and fills your soul with contentment. That is precisely what enjoying a bite of chocolate fudge feels like.

Chocolate fudge, if done right, is smooth like butter. It’s similar to Toffee blocks or a Turkish Delight. But instead of being sweet, it is rich, chocolaty and addictive.

What is Chocolate Fudge?

Chocolate fudge is a type of confectionery made using three main ingredients – sugar, butter and milk. It looks like chocolate; however, the texture is slightly different.

Unlike regular chocolate, the chocolate fudge remains soft and spongy in room temperature.

Unlike a chocolate cake or chocolate brownie, the chocolate fudge does not contain eggs or flour. Thus, no cooking or baking is needed to make chocolate fudge except for melting the butter and sugar.

The History of Chocolate Fudge

To understand the history of Chocolate Fudge, you must first learn the origin of the fudge itself. It is believed that fudge was invented by a chocolatier on Valentine’s Day in 1886.

Some even believe that the invention was by accident due to a botched a batch of caramel. At the time, the term used was “fudged,” hence why the invention was called fudge.

In the late 1880s, fudge shops started appearing in different parts of America like Michigan and Maryland. At the time, fudge was sold at 40 cents a pound!

Fudge-making became popular amongst women college students. In 1888, a Vassar College student, Miss Hartridge obtained the recipe to make fudge from her cousin and sold about 30 pounds of fudge in Vassar College, New York.

The incident is said to be how fudge spread to New York. Ever since then, fudge recipes became increasingly popular.

The original recipe was created using vanilla extract; however, when the recipe became widespread, different colleges started working on their twist to the method by adding new flavours such as caramel and chocolate.

In the modern world, chocolate fudge can be enjoyed at chocolate confectionaries and dessert stores, although they are not as cheap as they were in the late 1800s.

In the US, popular fudge flavours are peanut butter and chocolate. However, in countries like the United Kingdom, you can find unique flavours such as rum, raisin and toffee. In the US and Canada, fudge lovers can also enjoy the dessert with ice cream, a dish popularly called hot fudge.

Modern flavours include rocky road fudge, rose and pistachio fudge and salted caramel fudge. Besides enjoying it as it is, it comes in the form of cake, brownies and ice cream. After all, when it comes to chocolate, there are no limitations to what you can do with it.
