What is Crème Brûlée Chiller

Crème Brulee Chiller is an exclusive item from the cold drinks menu of Gloria Jean’s establishment. It is a cold blend of caramel syrup, white chocolate, fresh espresso, and milk. This drink is mainly composed of blended ice (with the previously mentioned blend of components) topped with whipped cream and caramel swirl.

History of Crème Brûlée

We usually come across crème brûlée as a dessert in the form of burnt cream or trinity with a custard base. Since then, crème brûlée is not limited to a dessert but now, has been made into different forms such as beverages. It is usually served slightly chilled.

The earlier version did not include a torched caramel top, but only placed a caramel disk. The question of who first caramelised the caramel sugar is still a mystery. The earliest recipe was found in Francois Massialot’s 1691 cookbook, Cuisinier royal et bourgeois. It was not until the 1980s, that it became popularised by Sirio Maccioni in his restaurant, Le Cirque in New York City. It grew popular as a dessert that is commonly indulged in at high-end restaurants.

The Catalans have claimed their dessert, Crema Catalana as the original crème brûlée. It is rich in custard, and it is flavoured with cinnamon and lemon or lemon zest. The drink is usually topped with caramelised sugar. Records of the drink existed back in the 18th century.

The dessert is also called Crema de Sant Josep after Saint Joseph, the husband to the Virgin Mary. In large parts of Europe and Spain, the traditional dessert is served on Saint Joseph’s Day which falls on the 19th of March.

When it comes to chillers, Coffee Bean was the first to pioneer ice-blended drinks. It all started in the summer of 1987, when a Coffee Bean employee brought a blender to mix ice with the drinks, coffee beans and chocolate powder leading to the invention of their signature Ice Blended drinks. Different establishments then followed suit and started making their versions of chillers.

Nutritional Information For Crème Brûlée Chiller

A serving of crème brûlée chiller has 337 calories. It contains 7.7 grams of fat, 62.9 grams of carbs and 3.4 grams of protein. Gloria Jean serves an option of sugar-free caramel syrup with skim milk offering you the same sweet taste minus the extra calories.

The fat content will depend on the milk chosen. Whole milk has 3.25% of milk fat compared to skim milk which has less than 0.5% of milk fat. Skim milk is high in nutrients providing more vitamins and minerals with little calories. Whole milk has a lower calcium content of 276 mg per cup with skim milk containing about 300 mg per cup. Vitamin A and D are added in skim milk and low fat, so the vitamins are not lost with the fats.

Chilled or ice blended drinks are notorious for their high sugar content. In one single chiller, about 14 grams of sugar is present in normal servings. With its whipped cream, which has high sugar and fat will add more calories to the drink as well. If you are watching your weight, it is best to reduce the intake of these sugary drinks.
