In the late 19th century, the thin version of potato chips that we know and love was created by an American cook named George Crum.

The story began when he was trying to satisfy his customer’s demands. The customer complained that the potato chips were too thick, hard to swallow and too plain which forced Crum to slice the potatoes into thin slices and flavoured them with enough salt and to deep-fry the chips to make it crispier and crunchier.

Surprisingly, the special potato chips were loved by the customer and soon spread to the public. People began to frequent Crum’s establishment to taste the delicious and crispy chips. The crispy chips managed to carve its way to the heart of diners and became the talk of the town. To date, we have potato chips with flavours such as barbecue, black pepper, salt and pepper, cheese, sour cream and onions and countless more.

How to Make Crispy Chips

To make the crispy chips, firstly, you need to prepare all the ingredients on the table. The ingredients are sliced potatoes, oil and salt (and even pepper, if you prefer). After preparing the ingredients, you can slice the potatoes as thin as you can, or it would be better off using a slicer if you are not used to cutting so thinly using a knife.

Put the sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water. Wash and rinse the potato slices and coat it with salt. A moderate amount to ensure that the potato slices are flavoured will do. Let the sliced potatoes soak in salt for half an hour to absorb the saltiness. After half an hour, rinse the salted potatoes under running water and drain the sliced potatoes to remove all the salt from the potatoes.

The last step is to deep-fry the sliced-potatoes in oil that has been preheated to 365 °F until it turns crispy and golden brown. The last touch would be to season the crispy chips with any additional flavours such as pepper or serve it with sour cream. Your perfect snack is now ready to be consumed!
