Dish of the Day: Dolsot Bibimbap

Bibimbap is a common word in the dictionary of Korean cuisine foodies and most of the people in Asia. This dish was listed as “50 world’s topmost delicious food” in a CNN poll and has gained its popularity not only among the Koreans but tourists worldwide as well. In this article, we’ll be featuring dolsot bibimbap specifically.

In fact, bibimbap is so famous that airlines also offer this dish as an in-flight meal. Generally, you’re presented with a bowl of warm white rice, mixed with “namul” ( sauteed green vegetables) and “kimchi”.

Bibimbap means “mixing rice” or “mixed rice”. As to this, Dolsot Bibimbap is different than other bibimbap because of the way it’s served. “Dolsot” means stone pot in Korean. Hence, the dish is mixed rice served in a heavy bowl or pot made out of stone.

It is especially common in Malaysia, whereby we could find this in any Korean restaurants here.

What is in a Dolsot Bibimbap?

Similar to bibimbap, Dolsot Bibimbap includes white rice, vegetables and meat all placed neatly and served with “gochujang” (Korean chilli paste), soy sauce or “doenjang” (fermented soybean paste).

Raw eggs and beef or meat slices are often added for some protein and to enhance the flavour. It is served in a sizzling stone pot, coated beforehand with sesame oil. Customarily, the rice is usually mixed thoroughly with the ingredients right before consuming. This is why you may see burnt brown rice at the bottom, and this crispy, burnt rice actually makes the entire dish more delicious!

Do note that the stone pot is still hot and care must be taken when eating the dish, especially with metal cutleries.

The Origins Of Dolsot Bibimbap

As of now, there is no record of the exact origin of the dish. However, it has been said to originate from Jeonju in Jeolla Province, Korea.

The capital city is still widely recognized for this dish and recipe. Similar to other famous Korean dishes such as dak galbi and japchae, this dish is common in most restaurants in Korea.
