Dish of the Day: Fried Wonton

Wonton is something most, if not all, Malaysians grew up with. Back in the day, wontons can be found from the roadside hawkers to Chinese restaurants. Wontons are commonly found served with Wan Tan Mee.

Wonton is a symbolic snack for Malaysia local Chinese food. It is versatile as the wonton dumplings can be fried or in a soup.

The Origin of Wonton

Wonton originated from Northern China, and it is well-known as dumpling for most of us. The history of wonton started in the Tang Dynasty. This snack was generally eaten by the Emperor of China and the royal family as wonton was served in most of their meals.

Wonton is a popular snack or dish in major parts of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Beijing and Shanghai. Different countries and provinces have their method of eating wonton. The most typical way of making it is the wonton soup.

Varieties of Wonton Fillings

Wonton can be eaten in many forms. Even in Malaysia, we have different fillings for our fried wonton. Generally, wonton is similar to dumplings. However, it is different in terms of texture and fillings.

Wonton is made in a thin layer of dough, and the fillings can be minced meat, minced pork, shrimps, vegetables and mushrooms.

It can be in many different shapes, but fried wonton is usually bell-shaped. After boiling the wonton to soften it, it is then dipped into flour and egg, then deep-fried in hot oil, creating a crunchy outer skin layer with chewy and soft fillings.

How To Eat Fried Wonton?

Fried wonton can be eaten on its own just like that. It can be a great snack or side dish for little children as well. Other than that, Fried Wonton is usually eaten with other dishes and rice.

In Malaysia, we eat fried wonton with springy noodles in black sauce, which is Wan Tan Mee. The soft and chewy noodles are a great match with the crunchy fried wontons, creating contrasting textures and flavours.

Besides Wan Tan Mee, fried wonton is also served in typical Chinese restaurants. Usually, it is served together with other dishes as well. The fried wonton dish in restaurants can be during dinners for family reunions or weddings.

Where To Find Fried Wonton?

Fried Wonton is so common that you can find it in any hawker stall in Malaysia. Sometimes, you can find it in the market as well. Dried and pre-packed wontons are also available, so all you have to do is just deep-fry it.

If you love to cook and prepare food yourself, you can prepare this delicious snack at home, and it is relatively easy to make. Just get the ingredients from your local grocery store and you are ready to fry your wonton.
