What is Honey Butter Chicken Wings?

Korean honey butter chicken is a crunchy double-fried chicken in honey glaze sauce. It is famous for its super crunchiness that has made it way around the globe.

History of Honey Butter Chicken Wings

From its very inception, the Korean fried chicken was famous for its spices and flavour. Some historians argue that deep-fried chicken was brought into America by the U.S. military after the Korean War. Fried chicken in Korean style was delivered to virtually every household in modern apartment complexes in the 1980s, and was dipped in a sweet and spicy gochujang sauce.

The economic crash in Asia in 1997 led to a craze, with many discharged employees opening up fried chicken restaurants for a living. Korean fried chicken as it is often called in the U.S, started to change to having a thin corn-starch coating with soy garlic or sweet and spicy sauce.

The increased presence of fried chicken in Korea was acknowledged by Karen Park and Young-Jun Park, a Korean American immigrant family residing in Washington, D.C. The Parks thought that the American palate was starting to accept Korean dishes as the Hallyu, or Korean Wave of K-pop and K-dramas were spreading worldwide.

In 2013, KoChix was launched, a famous restaurant now in Washington, DC’s Shaw neighbourhood.  The crispy texture and the sweet aroma of fried chicken was known by its clients as the “Candy chicken,” deliciously sweetened to cater to American consumers.

Even with spicy sauce, fried chicken from KoChix needed to double its attempt to imitate the crispiness of Korea fried chicken. Finally, they brush on honey and serve with any one of the three unique Korean-style sauces: soy garlic, honey spicy, and hot honey spicy sauce.

These sauces are similar to the Korean fried chicken sauces in the ’80s and ’90s and brings back memories of growing up in South Korea for Koreans while expanding the taste buds of Americans.
