Sushi has always been the best dish in Japanese cuisine. Sometimes, when I feel peckish or not exactly hungry, I would go for sushi. The sushi itself consists of various types, for examples, there are Mentaiko Sushi, Maki, Temaki, Nigiri, Sashimi and many more. Kaki Mental Roll is one of the common sushi dishes in Japanese cookery.

Kaki Mentai Roll basically refers to deep-fried oysters wrapped in seaweed and rice and topped with Mentaiko sauce. This sushi tastes as amazing as how it sounds!

The History Of Sushi

Sushi is a way of creating delicious small dishes by preserving fish in salt. This started during the ancient days in Japan fishing village in order for them to preserve their seafood. During those days, sushi was usually eaten during celebrations and major events, such as New Year, Harvest Day, weddings, or as a serving course for the Emperor and the royalties.

Typically, sushi is preserved in vinegar and rice wine. However, in this popular modern days, the Japanese rice itself is sticky enough to wrap around the fillings. Besides, there are sushi moulds to maintain the sushi shape as well.

The Art Of Eating Sushi

Generally, to avoid our hands getting dirty, we would eat sushi by using chopsticks. However, according to the experts in Japanese sushi cuisine, the correct way to eat sushi is by your hand.

The correct way to lift sushi is by taking one piece of it with your thumb and middle finger. Then, Wasabi is not supposed to be mixed with the soy sauce or sweet sauce. Rather, it should be added on top of the sushi without the soy sauce.

While dipping your sushi in soy sauce or sweet sauce, you may want to remember that wasting soy sauce on sushi is a taboo in Japanese cuisine etiquettes. A tiny dip on the fish itself is actually sufficient.

In addition, one should not take a few bites when eating sushi. As it is already in small bite-sized, sushi should be eaten as a whole.

What Makes Kaki Mentai Roll So Special?

Generally, the sushi commonly found in the restaurants are fishes such as salmon, tuna, eel or sometimes there are seafood ingredients such as squids. However, this particular sushi dish is slightly different. It uses oysters as the main ingredients for the dish.

Since oysters are a generally expensive type of seafood, this dish is rather exclusive. Furthermore, it is not served in the typical sushi manner, whereby it is wrapped in seaweed on the outer layer.

Kaki Mentai Roll is wrapped in Japanese rice, with seaweed on the inner layer. Then, Mentaiko sauce, which is basically pollock roe sauce and melted cheese are served on top of the sushi dish.

This dish may be eaten on its own as the Mentaiko and cheese have already given the flavour to it, but it can be eaten with Wasabi sauce as well, just like the rest of the sushi dishes.

Where To Find Kaki Mentai Roll?

Sushi is generally easy to make, so you may try to do your own Kaki Mentai Roll at home. If you cannot find Mentaiko sauce, you may use melted cheese and Wasabi as the pairing sauce.

Other than that, this sushi dish is not difficult to find at all. In fact, it is quite common in most Japanese restaurants. You may look up some of the examples here for Kaki Mentai Roll:
