Lok Lok is a local street food that we Malaysians have grown to love. Its concept is similar to Hot Pot, which normally consists of either pure hot boiling water or flavoured broth as soup bases.
Concept Of Lok Lok
The word Lok Lok is a Cantonese dialect which means to dip. Lok Lok involves dipping different types of dishes on skewers into the hot boiling water, whereby each skewer is colour-coded to indicate the price. Lok Lok is meant to be shared, and even if you are alone, you will get to share the hot boiling water pot with other friendly locals.
Lok Lok consists of various dishes on skewers, such as quail eggs, sausages, clams, enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon, broccoli, ladies finger, fish balls, meatballs, squids, abalone slices, crab sticks, Sui Kow, dumplings, mushrooms, Wanton, beancurd, cockles, liver, etc.
After dipping the uncooked dishes in the boiling water, you may choose to have some sauces to pair with your dishes, such as chilli sauce, peanut sauce and sweet sauce.
Most of Lok Lok vendors operate from evening onwards, making them a go-to place to have light dinner among the working urbanites. Also, if you prefer to eat Lok Lok for supper, worry not, as some of the vendors open until late at night.
Different Styles Of Lok Lok
Lok Lok is considered street food and can be found in a normal hawker centre or food court. Today, some Lok Lok vendors operate their business from food trucks, and some serve Lok Lok with round tables and chairs. If you are looking for a quick meal, you can opt for stand-up Lok Lok.
