History of Mad Cheeseburger

In the late 19th century, meat was already a common food available for people of all classes. The peasants get to enjoy eating burgers as it was the cheapest source of beef during that era.

The creation of burger with cheese was first introduced by a 16-year old boy named Lionel Sternberger in 1926. Sternberger who was working with his father as a fry cook experimented by dropping a cut of American cheese on top of a seared hamburger.

The end result was a delightful combination of melted cheese and patty that went between two seeded buns. With the success of that burger, he started tweaking the recipes with various types of cheese. He found that the best combination was cheddar cheese with patty (or cheese stuffings).

The cheeseburger became the star among other burgers. The overwhelming responses by the locals have made the cheeseburger one of the best selling burgers at the time. From that moment, many restaurants took notice of the importance of cheese as a condiment. Cheese has then been added to various dishes in every type of cuisine.

The people’s love of cheese remained throughout the years till present time. Now, cheese is still loved by people that it has also been fused with traditional dishes. For example, a long-established snack in Malaysia is the “goreng pisang” which are fried bananas. This snacks is popular throughout Southeast Asia, in countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

Some vendors have made their own take on “goreng pisang” by adding cheese to it. Despite the initial surprise, the locals grew to like the addition of cheese to other traditional snacks as well.
