What is Mashed Potato and Gravy?

Mashed potato and gravy was first recorded in The Art of Cookery recipe book by Hannah Glaze. Potatoes originated from Peru. The mashed potato was first invented as baby food for infants as they require soft foods.

The first invention of mashed potato started with the discovery of a new cooking method called ‘foodstuffs’. The foodstuff method is by heating stuffing foods in various tubes that are covered by dried land. The dried land helps to contain the heat and surround it so that it is cooked evenly. This method is the core inspiration for the invention of the oven. The food inside is heated from every direction. 

This method of cooking is first used to cooked mashed potato to soften the potato to be fed to infants. As potatoes can be easily found in that area, plenty of potato-based dishes were created. Mashed potato was not only enjoyed by infants but by adults as well. Every family in Peru started to enjoy eating mashed potato and this dish soon spread to other regions.

To flavour the mashed potato, many different toppings and additions were tried by everyone. People started to prepare mashed potato with butter, milk and cream to create a milky and buttery taste. The mashed mixture is then seasoned with salt, pepper and desirable herbs and spices. However, mashed potato is best suited and commonly mixed with black pepper gravy.
