Dish of the Day: Mushroom Truffled

Everybody knows pasta goes with almost anything and it is a dish we know everyone will like but have you ever had a good plate of Truffled Mushroom Pasta before?

This dish isn’t like any other mushroom pasta you have ever tried, and it certainly does not use the button mushroom that we are so used to.

Pasta isn’t the only dish you can have truffles with. You can have truffle with risotto, mushroom soup and even a loaded fries. No matter what choice you go for, once you’ve tasted the decadence of truffle, you will keep coming back for more.

What is Truffled Mushroom?

The truffle, or scientifically known as Tuber melanosporum is considered to be one of the most expensive edible mushrooms in the world (30g of truffles will cost you about $30). Some even call the truffle the diamond of the kitchen.

The truffle is a type of fungi that typically grows in tree roots, and because it can’t be farmed, it maintains its hefty price tag. It can, however, be cultivated.

In general, there are two main types of truffle, the white truffle and the black truffle. Although it is said that there are precisely seven different styles of truffles found across the world including the Middle East, China and North Africa.

Typically, black truffles can be found at the oak and hazelnut trees of the Perigord Region in France and along the Italian countryside. Hence, why black truffle is often used in Italian and French cooking like the Truffled Mushroom Pasta.

A black truffle looks like a burnt cauliflower except it has a harder texture and generally weighs between 30 to 60g. Because of its price, chefs often only use truffle shavings and truffle oil in food. It has a nutty and salty taste to it, and a little truffle is usually enough to flavour an entire dish.

Ways to Use Truffle in Food

There are three ways that truffles are usually used in cooking. The first one is pretty direct. Truffles are often shaved directly onto food like pasta and risotto, or they are cut into thin slices. As truffles don’t have a very long shelf life, they are typically only cut or shaved as they are about to be served.

The other common usage of truffle is truffle oil. Truffle oil is used by infusing olive oil with the truffles for some time. It has an overpowering smell and flavour, and it is typically used to enhance the taste of a dish. One of the most common ways to use truffle oil is with fries or in a sandwich.

The other method is truffle vodka. The name might suggest that it is a drink, but truffle vodka is used by chefs to flavour their dishes. As alcohol does not have the same consistency as oil, chefs can use it in different cooking methods such as to make sauces or even flavour their pasta or risotto.
