Dish of the Day: Nasi Kari Kapitan

Nasi Kari Kapitan

Forget burgers and fries because Nasi Kari Kapitan is the new fast food item we didn’t know we needed. Sure, burgers are cool but a bowl of hot rice that is drizzled with curry? That’s the best way to win over an Asian’s heart. Besides, no one can resist the smell of a good curry.

Most people say that fast food is not as good for your health. Well, this dish is different. A bowl of rice keeps us full and energized and chicken curry to help warm us up.

What is Nasi Kari Kapitan

The name gives it away – it’s a bowl of rice with Kapitan curry but to be more precise; this dish is that latest addition to Mary Brown’s rice bowls menu. When you order the Nasi Kari Kapitan, you are getting a bowl of warm rice that is topped with crispy chicken tenders and thick, creamy curry to go with it.

In case you’re wondering what the word Kapitan means, it initially refers to Chinese captains and is a term used by the Portuguese. In today’s food cuisine, Kapitan is widely accepted as the Baba Nyonya’s way of cooking their chicken which is usually thicker than the Indian curry.

The History of Nasi Kari Kapitan

The combination of curry and rice is a no-brainer. It is a well-known fact that India is the homeland of curry, but the Kapitan curry has a history that is closer to home.

Kapitan curry was invented in Malacca and is a part of the Baba & Nyonya cuisine. Back in the day, Malacca port was the meeting point for traders to stop and dock while they are cruising to other countries. Malacca became known to the world as a trading point, bringing people from around the world, including Chinese merchants who often stay over and start a family with the Malays, resulting in a hybrid culture.

Baba Nyonya (or Peranakan) cuisine is a combination between the Chinese and Malay cuisine using local ingredients. The Kapitan chicken curry is an example of fusion cuisine whereby it features curry but with the addition of Malaysian and Chinese elements making it unique to Malaysians.

Health Benefits of Nasi Kari Kapitan

Surprisingly, curry has a few health benefits, and that includes reducing cholesterol, boosting your immune system and reducing pain caused by arthritis. On the other hand, chicken is a good source of protein and niacin. Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, can help boost brain function and reduce risks of brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s. It can also help you fight depression and skin diseases such as dark spots and pigmentation.
