The History of Prawn Fried Hor Fun

Char Hor Fun or fried Hor Fun is said to originate from China in the town of Shahe, now part of the Tianhe District in Guangzhou. In China, Hor Fun is known as Shahe fen. The noodle is then translated into Cantonese, which gives it the name Hor Fun.

It was said that the Hor Fun noodle was perfected by the Cantonese by making the original Shahe Fen noodles thinner and adding in porous areas to allow the noodle to absorb the gravy and flavour of the broth. This method that was traditionally used for cooking the Shahe Fen.

The recipe then progressed to being wok-fried, and as the Chinese migrated to Southeast Asian countries, the recipe followed. While some recipes were changed to adapt to the local flavours, the Prawn Fried Hor Fun remains an unchanged favourite as the ingredients were synonymous with the Southeast Asian culinary culture.

Some people might argue that the Hor Fun is similar to that of the Kuey Teow, but good Chinese restaurants would never mix the two noodles. Today, Char Hor Fun is famous in countries like Singapore and Malaysia.

Its Nutritional Content
