What is Prawn Gyoza Mandu?

It is a type of dumpling that typically filled with prawns, cabbage, and scallions. The prawns are either used as a whole or cut into pieces. Then, the prawns mixed with vegetable fillings. Most common vegetable fillings are napa cabbage, scallion, celery, mushroom, carrot, and chives. The flour-based dough is shaped into thin sheets and stuffed with the fillings. Then, the edges of the dough are pressed together to ensure the fillings stay inside.

There are many methods to cook these dumplings, including steamed, deep-fried, pan-fried, or boiled. By steaming the dumplings, you can enjoy the juiciness and various textures of the delicious ingredients. It creates s soft and succulent meat-filled dumplings that you will never forget.

Some people do prefer their dumplings to be fried. There are two ways of fry the dumplings, first by pan-frying them so the bottom becomes crispy while the top remains soft. Another way is to deep fry the dumplings in oil, where the whole dough will be crispy. Either way, it creates a perfect balance of crispiness and juiciness of the dumplings.

History of Mandu

Dumplings originated from China and more known as Jiaozi. There are several theories about the creation of dumplings. The first theory was during Eastern Han (AD 25-220), while another theory was during Western Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 9)

Dumplings were becoming popular during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). It was served during breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Due to its then popularity, the recipe then spreaded to other Asian countries. In the 14th century during the Goryeo Dynasty, dumplings were introduced to Korea. The Koreans then created their version of dumplings called mandu.

On the other hand, during World War II, the Japanese soldiers became familiar with jiaozi during their stay in China. When they went back to Japan, recreates their version of dumplings and thus gyoza was born.

Since then, many varieties of dumplings are available across the world. Depending on regions and places, various ingredients used to create this versatile dish. However, the concept remains where the thin dough wrapped the meat-vegetables filling.

Differences between Jiaozi, Gyoza, and Mandu

Jiaozi are a kind of Chinese dumplings. On the other hand, Gyoza and Mandu are the Japanese and Korean versions of Chinese dumplings. The most obvious difference between Gyoza and Jiaozi is the rich garlic flavour. Gyoza fillings have more garlic and finely chopped fillings compared to Jiaozi. Besides that, the gyoza wrappers are consistently thinner and create a wonderful crispy texture when fried.

Both types of dumplings are served with a soy sauce as a dipping sauce. The soy sauce may contain vinegar, garlic, hot sauce, and sesame oil. Besides that, these dumplings can be added to the soup as well.

Mandu is very similar to Gyoza. However, Korean people tend to serve Mandu with kimchi or as a side dish with rice cakes and vegetables.
