The Story of Roast Chicken

Roast chicken has been a great dish enjoyed by families for centuries, and while different cultures prompted different recipes, the heart of the meal remains the same – a whole chicken that is either roasted in a home kitchen or on a rotisserie, also known as a rotary spit.

In the UK and Ireland, they often have roast chicken as a Sunday meal with the family, also known as the Sunday Roast. In the UK, a Sunday roast is served with a side of Yorkshire pudding, chicken stuffing, mint sauce and gravy while the Irish serve their roast chicken with potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

In the United States, roast chicken is often served during celebrations like Christmas or Easter. Generally, a whole chicken is prepped and filled with stuffing before roasting it in the oven. It is then served with mashed potatoes or fries, vegetables, pasta and gravy. Some might even serve it with dinner biscuits.

The rotisserie chicken only started in 1946 in Mexico. A corner store owner by the name of Gutenberg Melchor Ocampo from Colonia Anzures made the discovery when he was looking for a way to cook his chicken evenly in a shorter time.

The rotisserie allowed him to cook about 3 to 6 chickens at a time. By the 20th century, roast chicken became a family favourite, and by the 70s, you can pretty much see a rotisserie on every street in Mexico.
