Dish of the Day: Roti Planta

Your morning will be complete with a plate of Roti Planta and a hot cup of teh Tarik. Enjoyed by many, especially by those who would like to have something on the sweeter side, this is a buttery and crispy bread dish that will go well during any time of the day.

What is Roti Planta?

Roti Planta is essentially just flatbread that has been generously spread with margarine, which has been then pan-fried until crispy. Roti is the Malay term for bread, and Planta is a famous brand that is known for its product- margarine.

Put the two together, and this dish was born. Its buttery taste and slick texture are best accompanied with sugar instead of the usual curry or dhal.

Its History

Roti Planta is massively popular with the Malaysians, but the roti isn’t exactly local itself. It’s a flatbread dish that first originated from India and was brought to Malaysia through British colonialism.

Just like any other places in the world, Indian food and culture spread throughout the region. Roti Canai is the most known roti and also the most basic, while Roti Telur is for those who like a little bit more protein. The standard practice is to have Roti Canai either with curry or dhal. However, it is slightly different when having Roti Planta. It is good to be eaten by itself or with sugar, although some places do serve it with curry, too.

Since its arrival, Roti Canai has evolved, creating variations of flavour. The combination of Indian-Malay culture has produced various types of Roti Canai. Other than the Roti Planta, there is also Roti cheese, Roti Bawang (onion) and Roti Sardine, to name a few. This dish, too, has become one of the national dishes of Malaysia alongside the famous Nasi Lemak.

This roti dish is good on its own. However, some people make it even better by adding some kaya jam (coconut egg jam) onto the roti. The sweetness of kaya goes well with the salty butter. There is also a cheese version of this dish, where some shredded cheese sprinkled on top of the roti.

A Simple Substitute

Roti Planta may not be as popular as other variations of the dish, but it has its fans.

If you’re unable to satisfy your cravings, the easiest substitute for this dish is to spread margarine or butter on a piece of white bread. Then, either sprinkle the sugar on top or dip it in sugar to make it even more delicious. It’s easy and quick, and even children can prepare it themselves.

Where to find Roti Planta in Malaysia

You can find this dish anywhere that sells Roti Canai. So, most Malay and Mamak restaurants will surely serve this roti dish.
