Dish of the Day: Shake Toro Shioyaki

Sushi has always been my favourite Japanese dish. From noodles such as Ramen, Udon, Soba, and Donburi, to small meals, including sushi and Yakimono- Japanese cuisine has always been incredibly versatile.

But there is one particular sushi that is healthy and delicious. Shake Toro Shioyaki is one of the most popular sushi dishes in Japanese cuisine.

What is Shake Toro Shioyaki?

So what is Shake? Some people might call it ‘Sake’, but what’s the difference between Shake and Sake?

In actuality, both Shake and Sake have the same meaning- salmon. However, Sake can also mean alcohol in Japanese. Therefore, Shake is sometimes used to differentiate it from its alcoholic counterpart.

Shake Toro Shioyaki is a type of grilled salmon belly sushi that consists of salt as the sauce base. It is slightly salty since it is coated in salt, but beloved by most Japanese people.

The History

Whenever people think of sushi, they will automatically link sushi to raw fish. But sushi isn’t raw fish. It’s rice coated in vinegar with different types of toppings or fillings. These toppings and fillings may include raw fish or other types of raw seafood ingredients, but it isn’t always the case.

This type of preserved dish was invented in the 16th century and has become extremely popular since, especially in the Kyoto region of Japan.

People often eat sushi as their main course at any time of the day. Often, people would order a few plates of sushi dishes and snack them directly. It’s also usually paired with Wasabi to create a spicy sensation.

Why Shake?

The use of salmon in Japanese cuisine is widespread. It’s usually eaten raw or grilled and has become extremely popularised in Japanese cuisine nowadays. The versatility of salmon has become the main ingredient for most dishes in their daily meals.

But why salmon?

First of all, in general, we all know that salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. For people who are on a diet, salmon can be nutritious for them.

Furthermore, salmon is an excellent source of protein. Protein is essential for our body built and growth. The high protein content in salmon is good for us, especially growing teenagers and kids. Therefore, teenagers in Japan consume a lot of fish in their daily meal to grow.

Besides, salmon also carries a lot of potassium which helps a lot in reducing the risk of strokes, helping to regulate our blood pressure. Japan is known for its strong working culture. In this case, a stressful lifestyle is inevitable. Potassium can help to reduce the stress level in this kind of lifestyle.

Lastly, research has proven that salmon improves brain health. Japanese has included Shake in their meal almost every day, and it’s infrequent to see they have deteriorating brain health within the elderly.

Thus, salmon is delicious and versatile. Therefore it has always been used in different dishes and main courses in Japanese cuisine.

Where To Find Shake Toro Shioyaki?

Since it is not easy to create this kind of restaurant-level sushi at home, it is easier to get this in your local Japanese restaurants.

With more and more Japanese restaurants opening up in Malaysia, it is not difficult to find this dish at all! Here are some recommendations:
