Dish of the Day: Smashed Avocado On Toast

Not too long ago Smashed Avocado on Toast made headlines and became trending on Twitter when an Australian Millionaire made a bold statement saying that having smashed avocado on toast is the reason why millennials could not afford to own a house.

It’s a funny statement at avocadoes and house prices are a weird comparison to make. But what we know for sure is that smashed avocado on toast is a great way to start our mornings and we will never stop eating it even if it means we might have to stay in a rental a little longer.

The History of Avocado on Toast

While avocado on toast is seen as a millennial’s famous dish, it wasn’t invented by millennials. It was a dish that existed way before the word ‘millennial’ was ever created. Avocados in dishes date back 10,000 years ago in Puebla, Mexico.

The toast, however, was only created in 1893 so it’s safe to say that Avocado on Toast was invented in the late 1890s and early 1900s. According to Chef Rico Torres, the Mexicans probably had Avocado on toasted tortillas before bread came into the picture which comes to no surprise as avocadoes have always been synonymous with North American cuisine.

During the Spanish colonisation, they even dubbed avocado “the butter for the poor” so it is no surprise that when bread was introduced, the avocado became its perfect pairing.

However, it was Bill Granger of Bills Restaurant in Sydney who claimed to have introduced smashed avocado on toast to the world. According to Bill, it was the Australian café culture that put avocado on toast as a popular breakfast menu option worldwide.

Another chef, Chef Chloe Osborne, also claimed that she first tried smashed avocado on toast in Australia in the 1970s and brought back the recipe to the US. She added the dish to her Manhattan’s restaurant menu, and that in return helped the recipe spread across America.

No one knows who exactly introduced smashed avocado on toast to the world, but as avocadoes grow abundantly in Mexico, it is not that weird that it eventually made its way to the United States. In one of the articles that appeared in the LA Times, the author even wrote about witnessing a lady enjoying her avocado and toast back in the 1930s.
