Walk into any Chinese or seafood restaurant, and you will find yourself amazed with the live fish tank in front of you. The usual scenes involves customers walking around, with the sounds of children. Then you see a worker elegantly grabbing a fish net to catch a live fish to be brought into the kitchen.

Not long after, you will see the same fish served on a plate covered with red sauce looking fancy and appetising. The dish is none other than the sweet and sour fish!Imagine a crispy fried fish that is topped with sweet and sour sauce. It may seem like your average dish, but rest assured that this combination will set off explosions of flavour in your mouth.

What is Sweet And Sour Fish?

Sweet and sour fish is a classic Chinese fare that has the unique flavour of both sweetness and sourness. The completed dish has an overall reddish appearance. Tempting for certain people, harrowing for others. Covered in sauce, but once you dig in you can spot the golden-brown fish underneath. It is best accompanied with rice!

History of Sweet And Sour Fish

This is a traditional Chinese dish which originated from Shandong Province, in the Eastern region of China.Historians believed that the sweet and sour fish and other traditional Chinese cuisines were developed during the Manchus Dynasty, which was around 1644-1911.

Food became an important part of their culture and this has influenced their customs as well. Their cuisine was also noted for its importance during their three-day-long Imperial Banquets.Most notably on every Chinese New Year, there must be a dish of sweet and sour fish served on the table. In Chinese culture, fish represents abundance and wealth.

How to make Sweet And Sour Fish

  1. The main ingredients are fish fillet (of your own choice), 3-4 tablespoons of corn flour, vegetable oil, onions, green pepper, red pepper, yellow pepper, a tomato and 50g of canned pineapple.
  2. Mix all the ingredients to make the sauce and bring to a gentle boil. Set it aside.
  3. Prepare all the seasonings which are onion, peppers, tomato and pineapples.
  4. Heat up a wok with ¼ of oil. Fry the fish slices until they turn golden brown. Set aside to remove excess oil.
  5. Add on seasonings into the wok and stir-fry for about a minute.
  6. Add the sauce and stir-fry for 15 to 20 seconds.
  7. Add 2-3 tablespoons of water if the sauce is too thick.
  8. Mix the fried fish with the cooked sauce. Toss for another 20 seconds.

A sweet and sour fish is ready to serve!
