Dish of the Day: Thai Grilled Pork

Thai Grilled Pork

If you’ve ever walked the streets of Thailand before, then you’ll notice that the Thai Grilled Pork is sold almost everywhere in the streets of Thailand. It is one of the most famous street foods amongst the local and it’s for an excellent reason too.

Often served on a skewer, one bite into the juicy meat will instantly give you a flavour bomb and bring you comfort. It’s so good that even famous chefs from around the world have a recipe of their own for those far away from Thailand to make at home.

What is a Thai Grilled Pork

What makes the Thai Grilled Pork unique is the use of thinly sliced pork marinated in coconut cream, fish sauce, white peppercorns and cilantro before being grilled on a Skewer. In Thailand, this famous street food is often referred to as Moo Yang or Moo Ping.

The combination of fish sauce and coconut cream gives the grilled pork its sweet and salty taste, and a skewer will only cost you between 4 baht to 10 baht (approximately around RM 0.50 to RM 1.50). It is no secret that its low price and rich flavour is one of the reasons why everyone loves them so much.

The Story behind the Thai Grilled Pork

Thailand gets a lot of its cuisine influences from China. A lot of the Thai dishes that are popular today originated from Chinese dishes that were introduced to them by the Hokkien people and the Teochew people in the late 15th to 18th century.

This is why you can see a lot of the use of pork, tofu, noodles and the Chinese cooking wok-fried. Thai cuisine is also greatly influenced by the neighbouring countries like Vietnam, Malaysia and India who are also popular with using pork, coconut milk, garlic and turmeric in their cooking respectively.

The Moo Ping or the Thai Grilled Pork skewers is said to originate from the Chang Wat Phetchabun located in the north-central of Thailand; which comes as no surprise as central Thailand has a heavy influence of using coconut cream in their cooking while Northern people are well known for their marinated and fermented produce.

The Nutrition Content of the Thai Grilled Pork

The pork itself is a good source of protein. About 100g of pork contains about 25.7 grams of protein – that’s about one scoop of protein powder that cost you about five times the cost of 2 Thai Grilled Pork Skewers.

To be exact, the mypitnesspal app calculated about 16g of protein in a Moo Ping skewer and about 139 calories in total. We’re not saying that it’s the healthiest meal to eat and it certainly isn’t balanced, but it certainly helps you build those muscles.

Where to Get the Best Thai Grilled Pork in KL

You’d probably not be able to find the Thai Grilled Pork at the street vendors in KL (unless it’s a Thai foodie event) and you’d probably not get it as cheap as you would in Thailand but you can still enjoy this mouth-watering street food in KL none the less.

To get the best of the best, head over to Tiffin’s by Chef Korn for their Grilled Pork Skewers served with their very own homemade sauce and steamed glutinous rice or get the “Moo Ping” Pork Stick in Simply Thai to pair with your rice and other delicious Thai dishes.
