Dish of the Day: The Big Breakfast

The big breakfast is an apt name for the meal, all too true because of its size and portion. The popular breakfast meal is a plate full of carbs and proteins that are needed to start the day. In fact, it’s so popular that many cafes have chosen to make it part of their all-day breakfast menu items that customers can choose to enjoy any time of the day.

This essential breakfast meal is a no-brainer for those looking for a hearty and filling dish. Most restaurants and hotels serve it and no matter where you go, a plate of “The Big Breakfast” is sure to be appetising.

What is The Big Breakfast?

Basically, it’s a plate full of your essential breakfast selections. While there are often slight differences from one restaurant to another, they usually have the same concept and components. A big breakfast always consists of 2 loaves of toast or bread, hash brown or other potato dishes, eggs that can be made in whatever way you prefer, sausages, bacon slices, baked beans and some salad too.

Some restaurants also serve sun-dried tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, and vegetarian sausages for those who don’t eat meat.

Who Invented the Big Breakfast?

No one really knows how the Big Breakfast was first invented but this dish was a concept that initially started in England and Ireland for centuries. Besides, some claim that having bacon and eggs for breakfast was a routine started by Sigmund Freud.

According to folklore, Freud told his nephew that he wanted a hearty meal. Upon their arrival in America, he landed a job with a bacon company and told them of their story. Hence, bacon and eggs were invented.

While this might not be true, the British and Irish has similarly had their breakfast for the longest of time. With the Irish commonly serving black and white pudding as an addition to the already complete meal.

It became so prevalent in these countries that restaurants started serving them, and not long after, it became a standard breakfast meal served around the world.

Nutritional Content of a Big Breakfast

The Big Breakfast is a popular choice for a good reason – it gives you all the nutrients and energy your body needs to start the day. The sausages, ham and eggs are meant to provide you with the protein necessary to repair your body while giving you the energy to last the entire day. Toasts are intended to provide you with a source of carbohydrate and fibre for strength and aiding the digestion process.

Of course it wouldn’t be a complete meal without some vegetables to give you all the vitamin and nutrients you need to stay alert and sharp.
