Growing up in Malaysia, wanton noodle can be considered everyone’s childhood favourite. A bowl of wanton noodle could always fill up one’s belly after a long day of school or work. Wanton noodles, also commonly known as Wan Tan Mee by the locals, is part of Malaysia’s street food. It can be seen anywhere along the roadside or in many coffee shops around us.

The Origins Of Wanton Noodle / Wan Tan Mee

Since Wanton originates from Hong Kong and China, Wanton Noodle too, started its debut from there as well. Wanton noodle is usually prepared in two variations, namely dry wanton noodle and wanton noodle soup. This slurpy noodle dish was brought over to Malaysia during war times and eventually assimilated into our food culture. Wanton noodle can be eaten at any time of the day, and there is a lot of Wanton noodle stalls that operate even late at night.

Two Types Of Wanton Noodle

Wanton noodle comes in two variations, namely wanton noodle soup and dry wanton noodle. Wanton noodle soup is well-known for its savoury soup broth. The broth is usually cooked with vegetable stocks or pork rib stock. Wanton noodle usually comes with Char Siew, or roasted pork slices in sweet sauce, vegetables, spring onions and wanton, or dumplings.

Meanwhile, the dry wanton noodle contains the same ingredients as that of wanton noodle soup. The only difference is that it is mixed with black soy sauce and paired with a small bowl of hot Wanton soup. However, some districts serve this dish in other sauces, such as chilli sauce, vinegar or oyster sauce. Even so, the common ones are the black soy sauce and the soup based type.

Wonton Noodle’s main ingredient is Wanton. Some stalls may sell Wanton Noodle with fried wanton, but some will remain the traditional version of boiled dumplings. Wanton noodle soup is typically served with boiled wanton.
