Dish of the Day: Yum Ped Yang

A spicy salad that usually serves as an appetiser; Yum Ped Yang is a combination of savoury roast duck, crunchy vegetables, with a tasty dressing.

It is not only delicious but a healthy dish. Other than eating it as an appetiser, consuming with crispy bread makes it a fulfilling meal on its own

What is Yum Ped Yang?

‘Yum’ refers to Thai salad, while ‘Phed Yang’ means roast duck. The slices of roast duck combined with vegetables such as red onion, cucumber, carrots, cilantro, and tomatoes make this dish what it is. Sometimes, there are also slices of pineapple and unripe mango tossed inside.

The salad dressing used has the perfect balance of spicy and savoury for the juicy duck meat and crunchy salads. Some of the ingredients to make the dressing include garlic, bird’s eye chilli, lime juice, fish sauce, and palm sugar.

The duck used for this dish will be covered with sweet hoisin sauce before being roasted. This helps produce glazed and crispy skin with juicy meat inside after the duck has been roasted.

This dish can be easily found at most Chinese and Thai restaurants. 

History of Yum Ped Yang

Yum Ped Yang is a Thai-Chinese dish. It is believed that the popularity of the Peking duck gave rise to the invention of this dish.

Peopled in Thailand adapted this roasted duck and made their own dish.  Since Thai people prefer spicy food, they created this delicious spicy salad.
