Passionate about aquaculture, seafood and sustainability? Well, you’re in luck as the World Seafood Congress will be held in Asia for the first time this 2019. Leaders of the global seafood industry, innovations and technologies in the seafood supply chain will all be under one roof.
During the previous World Seafood Congress in 2017, it was announced that Penang has won the bid and was selected as the first Asian destination as the host of the event in 2019.
The World Seafood Congress serves as a platform for information, ideas and methodology exchange between those a part of the seafood sector and this also includes inspection, quality control and seafood processing technology. With the theme, “Seafood Supply Chains of the Future”, the 3-day conference unites distinctive world-renowned scientists, researchers, scholars and leaders all over the world.
The congress will be held at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre – the world’s first and only hybrid solar-powered convention centre. One of its defining features would be the combination of nature with architecture as seen with their landscaped 7-acre roof garden, and smaller spice and bamboo gardens, that are not only aesthetically pleasing but serve as communal spaces for the neighbouring communities.
Join in on all the exclusive activities and perks that are only for participants as registration is required for those that are interested. A welcome reception will be held at the end of the first day to allow participants a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Ticket holders also have an all-access pass to all of the sessions and talks held during the conference.
The theme of the talks is divided into Innovation, Responsibility and Sustainability. The sessions are packed right from the start of the day, so participants are encouraged to plan their day. The tight schedule is inclusive of lunch, and networking breaks are slotted in throughout the day for opportunities to speak to the speakers, discussions and to strike business deals.
Besides the speaker sessions, ticket holders may browse through a selection of companies and organisations in the seafood industry that was carefully chosen. A bonus is also given to all ticket holders as they will be given a free 2-years International Association of Fish Inspector(IAFI) membership.
Guests are also able to join the IAFI poster competitions and stand a chance to win cash prizes. The conference includes recognition to outstanding contributions to the seafood industry. The winners to the Peter Howgate Award, Women in Seafood Video Award and IAFI Special Recognition Award will be announced during the congress.
Scheduled for ticket holders, the conference includes social activities for guests to mingle and entertain themselves. The “Welcome Dinner” treats the participants to a wide array of Penang’s world-famous street foods. Thus, bringing the first day of the conference to an end in high spirits will good food and great company.
Not only that, ticket holders are invited to an exclusive themed party, “Aqua Night” in Georgetown and shuttle buses will be provided for the journey to and from the venue. Guests are expected to be treated to a memorable night of festive revelry and delicious food.
As congress comes to an end, those looking to make the most of their experience in Penang Island may choose to join the post-congress activities. Curated by the congress committee, an academic tour is available for participants to take a boat ride to the Centre of Marine and Coastal Studies at the University of Science Malaysia where they will be able to explore the marine lab, hatchery, museums and many more.
