Legend has it that if you mention the words Golden Triangle in KL, even a baby can point you the way. Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle, which is the capital city’s affluent area, includes the world-famous KLCC and Bukit Bintang areas. It is renowned for its daytime hustle and bustle, night life and fantastic amalgamation of vintage and modern, both of architecture and food. 9am – Breakfast at Simply D
Head down to Avenue K, one of KLCC’s many shopping galleries, to have a scrumptious breakfast at Simply D. Known for their fuss-free and wholesome spread, Simply D serves up a mean cup of coffee, and you could choose to have their French Toast with fruits and whipped cream if you’re craving for a western-styled breakfast – otherwise we recommend the Angelhair Mee Siam for a nice local kickstart to your day.
11am – Aquaria sighting
After a relaxed breakfast, make some time for Aquaria KLCC, KL’s only giant underwater-world type aquarium located in KL Convention Centre. Designed to be of ‘edu-tainment’ value, the aquarium premise also showcases various exhibits of flora and fauna and is a wonderful choice if you’re looking for some family quality time, or just to say hi to the many species of underwater creatures in the aquarium.
1pm – Soupy slurps for lunch
Hungry already? Good. One way to move around the Golden Triangle area is to get on one of the hop-on-hop-off buses. Move away a little from KLCC and head on down to Bukit Bintang, Malaysia’s shopping capital. Low Yat Plaza in Bukit Bintang houses one of KL’s most-loved traditional Chinese restaurants: Ah Yip Herbal Soup. Enjoy the nourishing soups and healthy dishes served up in the restaurant. If you ask any of the wait staff in the shop, they’d tell you that each and every soup has distinctive healing properties!
3pm – A view to behold
Hail a cab and make your way to Menara KL, or KL Tower, which has a viewing deck that rivals the best in the world. At 267m above sea level, the deck gives you the privilege of viewing the whole of Kuala Lumpur and also its outskirts, including Genting Highlands which is located 100km away! You’ll be given a PDA for an electronic guided tour of what you’re seeing, and also a pair of binocu-lars – all with a small fee, of course. We say money can’t buy the view!
5pm – Local handicrafts at Karyaneka
You can’t come to KL and not indulge in some local craftwork. Visit Karyaneka, located at Jalan Conlay, for insights into local handicraft and art. You can also try your hand at batik painting here, which is a cloth painting technique much loved in Malaysia. If you’re more into the tactile stuff, check out their wood carving and basket weaving sections. Great place to get souvenirs for anybody of any age!
7pm – Spicy touch of Indian delights
It’s dinner time! Treat yourself to some Indian fine-dining cuisine at Trishna, one of KL’s best-kept secrets. The restaurant is located within Istana Hotel, just a couple of hundred metres away from Berjaya Times Square. Trishna’s authentic taste has plenty of fans, and you will not run out of choices! Indulge in some cheese naan, replete with fish tikka and Afghan chicken, the restaurant’s specialty. Don’t forget to also fit in some sweet lassi as an accompaniment to your meal!
8pm – Music for the soul
Head on to Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DPO) and watch local and international musicians, tenors, choirs and more strut their stuff on one of Asia’s premier orchestra points. It is also home to our musical heroes, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, who perform their best pieces to audiences almost every week. DPO has a website where you can check performances and buy tickets.
11pm – Dance to the beat
The Golden Triangle is not known as the party hub of Malaysia for nothing! Head on over to Jalan P.Ramlee, and you’d immediately spot the crowd lining up to have their night of fun and drinks. We recommend that you go club-hopping, so that you sample a taste of the different kinds of music and crowds in each club. Go wild, let your hair down and let your day in KL culminate in a stylish ending!
