History of Layered Tea Beverages

Layered tea is originated in Bangladesh. It is their popular hot beverages. Tea is consumed mainly in Bangladesh. It becomes among the top ten countries that consume tea largely, that is how famous tea is in Bangladesh. 

The original Bengali layered tea consists of 7 layers. Romesh Ram Gour first invented the layered tea after discovering that every tea has a different level of density. He found out that every layer of tea is contrast in colour and taste.

The layered tea in Bangladesh can be up to 10 layers as per requested by the customer. With the different colour of the tea, Romesh poured in the tea layer by layer to form several shades in a glass.

Below is the list of the tea as according to the layer in the seven-layered tea;

Layer 1(top) – Cinnamon tea

Layer 2 – Leman flavoured tea

Layer 3 – Lemon flavoured tea mixed with condensed milk

Layer 4- Black milk 1 tea mixed with condensed milk

Layer 5 – Black milk 2 tea mixed with condensed milk

Layer 6 – Black milk 3 tea mixed with condensed milk

Layer 7 (bottom) – Green tea syrup with cloves, cinnamon and secret spices.

The layered-tea is organised according to its density to get a perfect taste and colour of the layered-tea.  The customer will have the joy of figuring out the flavour of each and every one of the layers and what could be the ingredient included in making the layer of tea.

1. Teh C Peng

The three-layered beverages idea starts from Sarawak drinks called Teh C Peng that have been Sarawak’s national drinks. This cold beverage consists of 3 layers that use different ingredients.

The bottom layer is liquid palm sugar and covered with the second layer that made of condensed milk and topped with black tea giving a strong and sweet taste to the whole drinks.

Steps of making:

  1. Extract the tea flavour by soaking the tea dust into hot water for 1 minute using the tea strainer.
  2. Remove the tea dust and strainer after the tea flavour is extracted
  3. Pour the palm sugar syrup into a different glass
  4. Add in the ice cubes into the glass
  5. Pour in the evaporated milk into the glass
  6. Finish off the beautiful look with a pour of the tea dilution.
