Making Compost Out Of Waste

Making Compost Out Of Waste

What is Making Compost out of Waste?

Have you ever wondered where all your trash goes? Your yesterday’s disposable cup, your sprite tin can, your last year’s book, your childhood broke toys and your used diapers when you were just a small baby.

Okay, your life long trash goes either to landfills or dumps. These two places existed in every region to receive and eat all the waste of everyone on the earth. When the landfill has reached its maximum capacity of waste, the waste will be covered with clay and plastic shields.

Please be fully aware and understand that landfills and dumps are not designed to break down waste. They are only used to store waste. The waste will be decomposed by itself but slowly and can take up to a million year.

Instead of waiting for the waste to decompose by themselves, we should beat the time and start composting by ourselves. If we only wait for the natural decomposing, our earth will eventually grow sicker and heavily polluted.

Making compost out of waste is one way of lessening pollution. Compost is a decomposed organic material that can be used in gardening. Materials that can be decomposed are trash, leaves, food waste, natural fibres, wood waste product and a lot more.

Why is Making Compost out of Waste is Important?

Making compost is very important as waste gives a major impact on our health, environment, ecosystem, economy and most importantly, to our beautiful earth. In your house, the filled and overflowing waste bins also play a significant role in affecting you and your households.

By decomposing, you can trade your daily waste to a more beautiful life. You can grow healthy and beautiful flowers and vegetables. The compost provides many essential nutrients and vitamins for the soil and plant growth.

It helps to enrich and moisturise both clay soils and sandy soils. Start to make compost out of your waste from your home, and you will see a more beautiful life ahead of you. Here are several affected areas, and what making compost out of waste can help:

The flies that buzzing around your food are also the same flies that roam around your waste. You are exposed to the risk of having salmonella, food poisoning and several other chronic diseases.

By making compost, you are reducing the garbage volume and preventing unwanted visitors from coming to come and visit you. Without them roaming around your house, you can avoid risky diseases.

The bad smell comes from your bin is the contaminated air. There are toxic substances in the air that causes the bad odour, which leads to air pollution. What happens when the air around you is polluted? Yes, you are breathing in the polluted air, exposing you to a variety of respiratory diseases.

By decomposing, you are helping yourself by terminating the unwanted toxic substance and lessening the use of chemical fertilisers and leads to creating more natural fertiliser for the environment. Now the unwanted toxic substances in the contaminated air like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane are gone. Fresh air means happy lungs. Yay for that!

Garbage and liquid waste that end up in the flowing water resource are harmful to the ecosystem. It will cause the water to be polluted, affecting the water ecosystem and also the animals that drink from the polluted water.

By decomposing liquid waste like used oils, fats and greases, you are helping to maintain the ecosystem and lessening the need for costly watering.

A healthy ecosystem plays a significant role in the ecotourism industry. Overflowing waste is a public nuisance and an eyesore to any beholder. Making compost out of waste will help to improve drainage and soil aeration. Everyone loves a clean, neat and fresh place with no single pollution and a beautiful and clean place means more visitors.

How Can We All Play Our Part?

A report by Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group stated that a single person produces 0.8kg of waste daily and 60% of daily waste generated in one single household is organic-based.

We can start by decomposing our waste in our house. Decomposing is easy and straightforward. You don’t even have to walk to a landfill or dump to dispose of your garbage. The decomposing process can be divided into several methods.

For the beginner, the simplest way to decompose is using a pot composting process. The pot composting process involves only pot and waste containers. You will need three of the pots and containers. You can buy the composting pots and the container, or you can build them by yourselves, up to you.

Here are the steps for pot composting;

  1. Classify your waste into two and separate them into dry waste and wet waste.
  2. Put the two different wastes into two separate containers.
  3. Once the wet waste container is filled up, transfer the wet waste into the first compost pot.
  4. Put dried leaves on top of the waste. The dried leaves must be in an equal amount of wet waste.
  5. Add semi composted material like cow dung or buttermilk into the first pot.
  6. Turn the wet waste post every other day.
  7. The pile of waste needs to be at the right level of moisturising. If it is too wet, add dried leaves and stir. If it is too dry, add water and stir.
  8. Leave the pot open up until 45 days for the decomposition process.
  9. Wait for two months, and the waste will turn into a rich compost that can help to improve your garden.
