National Cookie Day

Cookies are sweet snacks that come in different types and sizes and have various flavours such as fruits, nut and chocolate. This snack is perfect for any celebrations and on-to-go meal if you’re rushing.

History of Cookies

The word cookie originated from a Dutch word, ‘koekje’ which means little cake. In the early days, Dutch bakers often do a temperature check on the oven by putting a little bit dough inside so that they will not waste the whole cake mixture if the temperature is incorrect.

The first cookies were chocolate chip cookies that were accidentally made by Ruth Wakefield when she didn’t have enough to put into the batter, and she decides to use chocolate chip secretly. Since that, everyone has continue baking cookies and adding chocolate chips.

Types of Cookies

Moulded cookies are usually rolled by hand and made in cookie moulds. The dough is pressed the down flat using a fork like peanut butter cookies.

Dropped cookies are the easiest cookies to make. It uses soft dough that falls onto the baking sheet using a teaspoon. The dough will spread and flatten when it is baked. Macaroons are a notable example of dropped cookies.

This is the most popular dough that is usually chilled and rolled onto a sheet before being cut into different shapes using a cookie cutter. During this process, minimise the use of sprinkle flour to prevent the dough become stiff. A thinner roll will make the cookie crisp while a thicker roll makes the cookie chewy and soft.

Pressed cookies uses soft dough that extrudes from the cookie press. The dough must be soft enough to put through a cookie press and stiff enough to hold the shape. You can either refrigerate or add egg yolk to mix into your dough.

Refrigerated cookies are like shortbread and pinwheel cookies. The dough is stiff and refrigerated in the log until ready to bake and it is cut into thin slices using a sharp cutter before being baked in an oven.

Bar or square cookies are a soft kind of cookies that are almost like cake. It has a crispy texture but is soft on the inside. Brownies and Congo bars are the best examples for bar cookies. The sweet dough is spread on the pan and baked. The baked cookies are cut into square shapes before serving.

Non-baked cookies are cookies that don’t require baking. The cookies are usually made in a baking sheet and left in the refrigerator overnight. Once the cookies are set and solid, they are removed from the refrigerator just before serving.

Sandwich cookies are the kind which requires two cookie biscuits to be assembled on top of each other with frosting or cream in the middle. The best example to explain this sandwich cookies type is whoopee pie and Oreo.
