History of Doughnut

A doughnut is a fried flour dough that is sweetened by either sugar or various fillings. This ring-shaped dessert is well-loved by all dessert lover from all around the world. It can be made of multiple toppings and flavourings to sweeten the doughnut.

The doughnut was first mentioned in a book called A History of New York by Washington Irving’s in 1809. It was a Dutch dessert called olykoek or oily cake, a sweetened ball-shaped fried dough.

With the migration of Dutch settlers, the fried dough eventually became an American delicacy. Over time, the fried dough was innovated with different toppings and coatings to sweeten the flavour.

The ring-shaped doughnut was claimed to be invented by a 16-year-old American called Hanson Gregory in 1847. The greasiness and the raw centre of the ball-shaped doughnuts have been his concern in making one. To solve the problem, he was said to make a hole in the centre of dough using his punch and created a ring-shaped doughnut.

His mother, Elizabeth Gregory used the ring-shaped doughnut in her recipe and started to make a lot of ring-shaped doughnuts. The raw centre is now gone with a hole punched in. To avoid the raw centre, she came up with a solution by inserting fillings such as cinnamon and hazelnuts inside the dough.

From that day onwards, she started making ring-shaped doughnuts and ball-shaped doughnuts with fillings. The word doughnut stems from the fact that Gregory used nuts as his first filling for the fried dough.
