Panda Peeks – Five Sen5es at Westin KL

If there is one thing in this world that requires all five of our physiological senses, it would be food. With food, especially good food, our senses awaken and we see, hear and taste what’s on our plates holistically – making eating a divine experience. For me, Five Sen5es is aptly named, because it feasts all our senses with its delicious offerings.

The first dish we tried was the Braised Fish Maw with Shredded Duck and Dry Scallop Soup. What can I say? It was probably the best soup I have ever had in my life. The scallops were chewy and lovely to taste, and the shredded duck meat lent some texture and flavour to the soup. Perfect start to a meal? You bet!

The appetiser on the table was the Hand Shredded Chicken with Jellyfish, Toasted Sesame and Spicy Peanut Dressing. It was my first time trying jellyfish, and I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh it felt on my tongue! The appetiser itself was something very unusual, and the spicy kick was very welcomed. It definitely got me ready for the feast!

How could we come to a Cantonese fine dining restaurant and not try Peking Duck? We tasted their Famous Authentic Peking Duck – Two Series and were mind-boggled! I found the duck to be crispy and well-roasted, and the meat was tender and melt-in-your-mouth soft. Absolutely lovely, and it was my first time trying Peking Duck too!

However, you know what was the best dish of the day? The Honey Glazed Baked Black Cod. A piece of heaven? A scientific miracle? I may be dramatic, but I’m definitely not overselling it! The scent of sweet honey on the charred skin of the black cod was lovely, and the taste was out of this world! Whoever created this dish deserves a medal. Another dish we loved was the Sautéed Venison and Asparagus in Black Pepper Sauce. Venison in itself is amazingly tender, and the black pepper base was a perfect complement to it.

Hokkien Style Fried Rice with Seafood Gravy? You bet we tried it! Lovely fresh prawns and very authentic-tasting fried rice – it actually reminded me of the kind of fried rice we get at hawker stalls, and that’s a major compliment! We had a nice vegetable dish called Fragrant Crispy Vegetables with Roasted Pine Nuts, which was fresh, crunchy and exactly how stir-fried vegetables should be.

Desserts are a must, and Five Sen5es definitely didn’t scrounge with them! We tried two types: Chilled Silken Mango Cream with Pearl Sago and Crushed Thai Pomelo, and the Peanut Coated Rice Dumplings with Black Sesame Filling. As you would expect, both were luxuriously good, and my personal favourite was the Chilled Silken Mango Cream, which was a dessert quite unlike any I’ve tasted. The mango taste was sweet and smooth, and vanilla ice cream lent to its texture.

All in all, Five Sen5es was an experience to remember – and I’ll definitely recommend it to anybody who wants to experience opulent Cantonese food.
