Panda Peeks – Raisin’ The Roof

Raisin’ The Roof was the first vegan- and vegetarian-focused lifestyle cafe I had ever visited in my life. That’s how much I “love” vegetarian food. However, as I was doing research about the cafe and I came across many positive reviews, I wondered to myself if it could in fact be delicious – so I shook off my trepidations and bravely stepped into the cafe.

First, we tried a smoothie called Skin Glow, which contained wheatgrass, lettuce, cucumber, spinach, parsley, apple, lemon and guava. It tasted like a wake-up call (in a good way!) and was super refreshing. The nut milk we tried was Pistachio Rose, made from pistachios, rosewater, dates and sea salt. It had a soy-bean drink taste with a rosy nuance, and I particularly liked the bits of date in it.

We had a beautiful array of food in front of us, and it was hard to believe that most of it was vegan with not even a trace of dairy in them. Take the Pistachio Falafel Wrap, for example. The wholemeal tortilla wrap was filled with pistachio and herb falafels, with a good spread of hummus topped with shaved greens and leaves. It tasted absolutely creamy and satisfying, and the falafels were rich in flavour! Definitely one of our favourites for the day, and went well with the Jackfruit Milkshake we were served.

Of course, we couldn’t come here and not try their best-selling salad, the Pumpkin Quinoa Salad. There was spinach, fresh greens, oven-baked pumpkin cubes and quinoa grains mixed with pine nuts and feta cheese – drizzled with lemon-herb vinaigrette. The feta cheese lent some kick to the salad, and the freshness of the vegetables was undeniable. I see this as an appetite-builder, a salad to start your meal with.

We tried two other dishes – the Avocado Toast and the Rendang Bowl, both of which contained egg (therefore not vegan, please take note). The Avocado Toast blew our mind, because it wasn’t bread at all! Made from nuts and seeds, the toast was a gluten-free heaven. The Rendang Bowl was the pleasant surprise of the day, with lovely heat from the rendang a nice change from the mild flavours. It was surely my favourite of the day – and taught me that vegetarian food need not be boring!

My colleagues and I really loved what came next – the desserts! We tried 5 varieties – the Homemade Snickers Bar, Lava Cake, Purple Pecan Pie, Brownie and Raw Ferrero Rocher. Yes, you read that right. Each of these desserts lived up to their names, especially the Lava Cake which was oozing with chocolate and simply melted away all notions we had about vegan desserts, and the Raw Ferrero Rocher which tasted EXACTLY like a Ferrero Rocher. Heavenly!

All in all, it was a visit that was filled with lovely flavours, wonderful ingredients and absolutely no guilt at all. I highly recommend Raisin’ The Roof!
