Popular Non-alcoholic Drinks You Can Make at Home

No doubt, a celebration without alcohol may seem incomplete. But, never fear, non-alcoholic drinks do not disappoint! It’s a great way to enjoy the holidays without fear of vomit, drunken antics and total blackouts of the night before. 

Even better, friends and family of all ages get to join in on the fun, and you don’t have to prepare a separate beverage for those that can’t drink. 

Here are a few recipes of non-alcoholic beverages that you can make for everyone to enjoy on Christmas Eve or Christmas day while enjoying cookies;

1. Non-alcoholic eggnog

This classic is not to be missed. There’s plenty of eggnog recipes that do not contain any alcohol which proves how popular this drink is during the winter. Although most adults would prefer spiked eggnog, the alcohol-free version is delicious as well. 

Kids and adults alike are sure to enjoy this thick, creamy and delicious home-made version of eggnog. Here is the recipe for making virgin eggnog:

  1. In a deep saucepan, mix milk, cinnamon and condensed milk over low heat.
  2. Bring mixture to boil by slowly increasing the heat to medium. Keep it to a gentle boil and avoid rolling boil.
  3. Add egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and beat until the eggs are fluffy or light in colour.
  4. Add on 1 tbsp. Hot milk mixture at a time while tempering the egg slowly. After done mixing the batter, pour back the mixture carefully into the saucepan over medium heat for 4-5 minutes.
  5. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens to leave a clean line on the back of a spoon.
  6. Without bringing to boil, combine nutmeg, heavy whipping cream and vanilla extract to the mixture one by one.
  7. Remove the spices by pouring the mixture through a mesh strainer. Let it cool and make sure to place your drinks in a tight container and refrigerate your drinks for at least an hour. Best served when cold!

2. Grown-up limeade

Limeade is suitable for anyone who likes sour and refreshing drinks. In fact, the beverage is a good source of magnesium and potassium. Limeade is slightly different from a regular lemonade. If you wonder what limeade tastes like, you can make this cooling drink right at home.

  1. Freeze the sliced limes in the freezer for at least an hour by laying it on a tray.
  2. Blend the chopped limes with sugar and add about 100ml of water until completely smooth and juicy.
  3. Sieve the mixture so that the pulp will be removed from your drinks.
  4. You can adjust the flavour by adding more sugar or lime depending on your preference. 
  5. Pour the drinks inside a jug and add sliced limes and ice.
  6. Top your glasses with soda, and it’s done! You can even add mint leaves into your drink if you like.

3. Snow globe hot chocolate

Even the name sounds lovely and perfect for the holiday season. With the decadent chocolate and fun process of making it, this is an ideal drink for a school fair or guests at a party.

  1. Skewer marshmallows on a cocktail stick to make a snowman. Cut excess stick from the top to make it look beautiful.
  2. Stick the chocolate button and domed chocolate together by using icing pen as glue. Top the snowman with the chocolate button and dome chocolate as the snowman’s hat.
  3. Using black icing pen, draw the eyes and three dots as a button for the snowman. Plait the strawberry laces and tie around the snowman’s neck as a scarf.
  4. Stick the bottom of a snowman to a cookie by using icing and let it dry for a few minutes.
  5. Combine cocoa and Horlicks powder and put on the bottom of the jar. Top the mixed powder with the snowman and randomly throw the mini marshmallow around.
  6. Warm the milk in a saucepan and take out the snowman from the jar before pouring the milk.
  7. Stir your milk constantly until the chocolate mixture is smooth ad evenly mixed. Enjoy your cute drink and dipping the snowman in.

Note: For those wanting to leave the snowman inside the jar as you pour the milk, replace the skewer sticks with white chocolate. Melt the white chocolate to act as glue to make the snowman.
