Recipe: Crème Brulee Chiller

For most of us, Creme Brulee is a deliciously wealthy custard covered with caramelised sugar.  But there’s so much more to this delicious delight.  The name Creme Brulee (Krem Bru Lei) is a French term indicating burnt cream.  The dessert is served cold.  It may feel warm, however, as the container of caramelised sugar is torched just before eating.  Many individuals often appreciate it with no torched sugar pastry.

Traditionally, the cream has been mixed with vanilla.  Over the years, however, other flavours have also achieved notoriety. A very comparable dessert, called Crèma Catalana, developed in medieval Spain.  Many believe that this is the idea for Creme Brulee.

In the United States, documents show that even Thomas Jefferson had Creme Brulee served in the White House.  It started to appear in cookbooks and journals in the 1950s.  It is a restaurant preference today.
