Recipe: Donkatsu

Crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Donkatsu is a deep-fried breaded pork chop, and it is a family favourite. It is an easy recipe to make at home, and most of the ingredients can be found in the nearest supermarkets. You will definitely turn heads with this recipe.

Ingredients (4 servings):

(For the gravy sauce)

(For the salad)

Directions:

(For the pork cutlets)

  1. Gather all the ingredients. Cook the rice before you start prepping other ingredients.
  2. Slice the extra fat off the tenderloin. The reason for this is because red meat and fat shrinks and expand differently. This is to make sure that the cutlets are nice and flat when it is deep-fried.
  3. Use a meat tenderiser to pound the meat. If you don’t have a meat pounder, you can use the back of your knife to pound.
  4. When it is nice and flat, season both sides with salt and ground black pepper.
  5. Coat the cutlets with flour. Dip them into the egg mixture and mix it with bread crumbs.

(For the salad)

  1. Combine the ingredients for the salad dressing. Mix it all in a bowl and leave it aside.

(For the gravy)

  1. In a saucepan, heat the butter. Add in the hi-rice powder and mix it well.
  2. Add in some water and ketchup and stir it in well. Cook it over medium heat for 10 minutes until it thickens.

(For the last steps)

  1. Scoop some rice and put it on a plate. Pour over gravy on top of it.
  2. Place the cutlets on the sides of the rice. Drizzle some gravy sauce on top.
  3. Put the salad on the side and its dressing on the side.
  4. Serve while hot. You can eat it with some kimchi or radish.
