Dumplings are a very common Chinese dish to have during family dinners. Whether it be for festivity reasons or just a typical dinner at home, there’s bound to be a bowl of dumpling soup somewhere. With a history of over 1,800 years, legend has it that Chinese dumplings were invented by Zhang Zhongjing to cure a frostbite epidemic in China. To remedy this, Zhang Zhongjing gave patients two warm dumplings in the shape of ears, and one hot bowl of soup and cured them as a result.

Now, people eat this dish on a day to day basis because of its delicious tastes. Here’s a simple recipe for you to try at home so that you can make homemade dumpling soup whenever!

Cooking Method:

  1. Mix the pork, raw shrimp, finely chopped spring onions and scallions with all the seasoning ingredients in a bowl. This will be your dumpling filling. Refrigerate it for 30 minutes.
  2. Once chilled, place one wonton wrapper on your palm and place 1 tablespoon of filling onto it. Dip your index finger in a small bowl of water and rim the edges of the wonton wrapper. Fold the dumpling over and press the edges together firmly to ensure there is no leakage.
  3. Place all dumplings on a floured surface or baking sheet. Cover with a damp kitchen towel to prevent them from drying.
  4. Put a pot of water to boil. Once boiling, place dumplings inside and cook until they float to the top. Drain excess water and set the dumplings aside.
  1. In a separate pot, put the broth and water to boil over high heat. Add pinches of salt and white pepper to taste.
  2. Just before serving, add in the dumplings and cook for 3 minutes.
  3. Pour into serving bowls, enjoy!
