Recipe: Fruit Rojak

The fruit rojak is Malaysia’s famous mix fruit salad with the tasty combination of sweet, spicy and crunchy, which will awaken your taste buds.

The word “Rojak” may seem like an odd word, but it means diverse, and in this context, it talks about the diversity of the dish. For example, how it is a mixture of fruits and flavours. The word is only used to name the meal but also slang to describe Malaysia as it a multi-racial country.

One of the essential ingredients of the dish is the sambal belacan. It gives the spice to this unique dish. Sambal belacan is extremely easy to make, and you can make up to your desired seasoning.

You do not forget the toasted peanuts which give the crunch to the dish and makes it a whole lot tastier. The dish overall takes barely 40 minutes to prepare, and it also leaves your tongue craving for more.

Ingredients:

(Rojak Sauce)

(Sambal Belacan)

Instructions:

  1. Toast the belacan in a non-stick pan until it turns brittle. This will take a few minutes. Once done, Remove the belacan and let it cool aside.
  2. Remove the seeds out of the red chilli and cut them into small pieces. Then, put the belacan that was toasted and the red chillies that were cut, into a small food processor. Let it process until it has turned as beautiful as desired.
  3. Fry tofu on a non-stick pan on all sides to crisp it up. Remove and slice thinly when cool enough to handle. Set aside.
  4. Combine all ingredients for the rojak sauce in a small bowl. Then, mix the ingredients well with a spoon.
  5. After mixing the sauce, add the sliced tofu, pineapple, mango, and cucumber into another bowl.
  6. Pour sauce into the bowl that has the fruits and vegetables and mix it well.
  7. Separate them into singular portions. Lastly, Sprinkle some chopped peanuts and sesame seeds over each part.
  8. Serve the dish immediately.
