Recipe: Mee Goreng

Mee Goreng is a classic Malaysian dish that is widely available from street stalls to high-end restaurants. This savoury and irresistible dish is greatly enjoyed by many people. There are many types of Mee Goreng available, depending on places and people preferences.

Fresh yellow noodles usually have preservatives to keep it fresh. Therefore, make sure you wash the noodles thoroughly. If not washed properly, the preservatives will make the dish tastes bitter and unappetising.

Chicken, beef, prawns, or squids are common ingredients in Mee Goreng. You can choose any of the above ingredients according to your preference. Mee Goreng is a versatile dish that easily goes well with any ingredients.

For a healthier option, you can add mustard leaves, bean sprouts, cabbage, carrots or tomato. This will give a balanced and healthy meal.

Directions:

  1. Blend the soaked dried chilli, garlic cloves and onions using the food processor.
  2. Heat the cooking oil in a frying pan under medium heat. Pour the blended paste and fry it until fragrant. 
  3. Then, put in the chicken meat and stir them together for 2 minutes.
  4. Add in tomato sauce, chilli sauce, soy sauce and salt. Adjust the salt according to your preference. 
  5. Put in the yellow noodles and stir for 3 minutes. Pour some water to help the ingredients mix well and to cook the noodles.
  6. Once the noodles have cooked, add in the mustard leaves and bean sprouts. Cook it for another 3 minutes or until the vegetables turn soft.
  7. Serve the noodles onto a large plate. Garnish with fried shallots, red chilli and lime for the finishing touch.
