Recipe: Pho Beef Balls

When it comes to Vietnamese cuisine, the first thing that comes to mind would be their famous ‘Pho’. Pho is Vietnamese comfort food as well as their common source of carbohydrates. Made of rice flour, Pho is widely used in Vietnamese cuisine, which includes the well-known beef noodles, beef stew to pair with and beef meatballs.

Meatball has always been part of the dishes to put in steamboat. Growing up in a traditional Malaysian Chinese family, I have eaten meatballs almost every day of my teenhood. Similarly, Pho Beef Balls have been one of Vietnamese’s favourite soup dish. It is effortless to make, and you can make it on your own when you are feeling for a snack or a little peckish.

Ingredients:

How To Cook It?

  1. In a mixing bowl or a large bowl, mix in the ground beef with baking powder, sugar, fish sauce, ginger. Add in some salt and pepper to taste as well.
  2. Mix the mixture evenly until everything is well incorporated or knead until the combination has become sticky and moist.
  3. Another way in case you do not feel like dirty your hands, you may use a food processor to blend everything too.
  4. Put the beef mixture in the fridge for about 15 minutes. If you do not want to do this step, it is beautiful as well.
  5. Take out the beef mixture from the fridge and pour out some flour to avoid sticking.
  6. Roll the beef mixtures with hands into meatball size. You do not want the size to be too small. It should be bite-sized or easy to cut into the half after cooking.
  7. Bring a pot of water to boil. Once the water is starting to simmer or cook a little, dip in the beef balls with a spoon carefully. You do not want your beef balls to come apart when you dip them to the pot.
  8. Cook the beef balls for about 10 to 15 minutes or until the beef balls surface on the water.
  9. Continue to lower the heat and simmer the beef balls for another 5 minutes.
  10. Turn off the heat and transfer the beef balls into a bowl of cold water. This is to make sure that the texture is chewy and tender to eat.
  11. After about 3 minutes, you may put the beef balls together with your Pho broth or Pho beef noodles.
  12. Serve while hot and tender.
