Recipe: Sirap Bandung

A favourite drink among Malaysians, Sirap Bandung (rose milk) is a tasty drink that can be consumed at any time of the day with a meal. Bandung can be translated from Malay as “pairs”, which may refer to the mixing of different ingredients and “sirap” refers to “syrup”, which constitutes the base to the drink, i.e. rose syrup.

Sirap bandung is mainly consumed by the local Malay people but is also enjoyed by all Malaysian, especially during Ramadan, when it is time to break fast, as the cold beverage helps to cool the body after being under the sweltering weather for a long time, as well as providing instant sugar.

Sirap bandung is made with the combination of evaporated milk, condensed milk and rose syrup. The delicious taste can be described as sweet and creamy with a hint of rose to it. However, some restaurants may use different types of milk and amounts used to create a unique flavour of sirap bandung.

The rise of the popularity of the sirap bandung has resulted in many versions of the drink, where some of them would add carbonated sodas, grass jelly, lychee and many more to the drink. People with a sweet tooth will most definitely enjoy the sweet drink that is also has an attractive bright pink hue to it.

Ingredients (2 servings):

Instructions:

  1. Add rose syrup and water (does not need to be hot) into a container and then stir well. After that, add a few drops of vanilla essence to the mixture and then stir it again. Make sure to taste the drink bit by bit before adding more drops to avoid the vanilla essence from being too overpowering. Proceed to add ice cubes and give it a few more stirs.
  2. The next step is to add evaporated milk and condensed milk into the mixture and then stir the mixture well. Lastly, add a few drops of the pink food colouring to enhance the pinkish colour of the drink and stir well. The drink is best served cold with ice cubes.

Note: The pink food colouring can be ignored as it only adds to the visual presentation of the beverage.
