Hailing from the land of the morning calm, the Taegeuk Warriors Burger is bound to give you a ‘kick’ on your tastebuds!Pretty sure that K-pop culture is beginning to seep into all parts of the world with superstars BTS, a seven-membered boy band contributed to influencing the world with their music.
Since K-pop had begun to land on its feet, it is no surprise that people are beginning to take note and understand Korean culture.Popular Korean dishes such as Kimchi, Tteokbokki, Bibimbap and Ganjang chicken have become quite sought-after by many people, and locals start to improvise their own menus to give it a Korean twist. One of the common Western dishes being given a new makeover would be BURGERS. Which is why we will be trying to kick up some kitchen Taegeuk today!
Taegeuk Warriors Burger
Servings: 4 burgers
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
(The fried chicken)
- 4 skinless boneless chicken thigh fillets
- A large piece of ginger, finely grated
- 100g cornflour
- Vegetable oil, for frying
(The sauce)
- 6 tablespoon of dark brown sugar
- 2 tablespoon of Korean chilli paste (gochujang)
- 2 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 2 large garlic cloves, crushed
- A small piece of ginger, grated
- 2 teaspoons of sesame oil
(The kimchi-style slaw)
- ½ white cabbage, finely sliced
- 1 mooli, shredded into thin strips
- 4 spring onions, finely sliced
- Small piece ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon of golden caster sugar
- 1 garlic clove, crushed
- 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise
- A pinch of hot chilli powder
(The burger)
- 1 Little Gem lettuce, divided into leaves
- 4 brioche or sesame seed burger buns, split and lightly toasted
Directions:
- Prep the slaw by combining all the ingredients for it. Add chilli powder to taste and based on preference. Chil the slaw in the fridge.
- Remove excess fats from the chicken thigh fillets, season with salt, pepper and grated ginger. Coat the chicken with cornflour.
- Bring to heat about 2cm of vegetable oil in a large pan. On each side, fry the chicken fillets for 4-5 minutes until crispy. Remove and drain the excess oil with a kitchen towel and leave it to cool for about 2 minutes. Refry the chicken in hot oil until you can hear a crackle. Remove and drain excess oil again.
- In a saucepan over low heat, place all the ingredients for the sauce and simmer gently until a syrup is formed.
- Build your burgers. Place some lettuce and slaw on the base of a bun then top with a piece of crispy chicken and drizzle some spicy sticky sauce. Cover with another half of a bun and the dish is ready to be eaten!
