Recipe: Tofu with Dried Shrimps and Onion

Ask any Chinese person what makes Chinese food so alluring, scrumptiously satisfying, mouthwatering, and most people would attribute that to the fragrant sweetness found in a number of (if not most) dishes. In fact, a great example of one such dish in almost every meal would be tofu!

As is customary with Chinese food, tofu can be cooked and prepared in several ways that would be too lengthy to describe in this recipe. However, a general consensus, or rather one of the more popular ways of cooking tofu would be to prepare it with dried shrimps and onions.

Tofu with dried shrimps and onions have garnered a sort of reputation as a great appetiser. With its soft and creamy texture coupled with tasty shrimps and onions, fused with sweet soy sauce, it’s no wonder that this dish is often widely regarded as essential when having Chinese food.

Contrary to what you may think, the star of this dish isn’t necessarily the tofu, but rather the soy sauce used as that will help accent the aromatic fusion of the entire dish. Best of all, this dish is not only scrumptious but also healthy!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Boil a wok of water, and then steam the tofu over high heat for a total of 9 minutes.
  2. While the tofu is steaming, fry the shallot slices in hot oil (on low heat) till it becomes golden brown in colour, and crispy in texture.
  3. Preheat a pan and add 1 tablespoon of oil.
  4. Toss the dried shrimps into the pan and fry until it becomes fragrant.
  5. Add some water (3 tablespoons) into the pan, along with both the soy sauces.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool down on the side.
  7. With the steamed tofu, remove the excess water and pour the contents of the pan on top of the tofu, this is where it all starts coming together!
  8. Lastly, garnish with a healthy serving of green onions, and service to your guests while piping hot! (chilli may also be served to your guests depending on their preference)
