Recipe Vietnamese Sizzling Balut – Trung Vit Lon

Balut is a South-East Asian delicacy most popular in the Philippines and Vietnam made from fertilised duck eggs eaten once the embryo is formed. Although a little on the extreme side for some, balut is commonly sold as street food and is known famously for its nutritional values.

This unique dish is usually eaten as a snack or appetiser best served with a cold drink. Sometimes, they’re even cooked to sizzle to enhance the taste!   1. Get a bowl and lightly dredge peeled balut with flour.
  2. Heat up oil in a wide pan, keeping the heat at medium.
  3. Next, add in the balut turning it on all sides until golden brown.
  4. Remove the balut from pan and drain them on paper towels.
  5. Reserve one tablespoon of oil from the pan and discard the rest.
  6. Add in aromatics (shallots, garlic, ginger, chilli peppers and bell pepper) to the pan making sure you regularly stir until softened and fragrant.
  7. In a separate bowl, stir in soy sauce, oyster sauce and water until homogenous.
  8. Add the sauce mix to the pan and bring to a boil. Gently add in the balut, careful to not break the egg. Spoon on sauce to cover the balut completely.
  9. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Remove from heat once the sauce has thickened and serve on a sizzling plate. Garnish with green onions and serve while hot.
