KL’s cafe culture is a booming industry, evidenced by how often a new cafe pops up on our Instagram feeds. With “yum cha” being our favourite hobby, cafes have had to keep up with the demands via new experiences and aesthetics. A feast for the eyes and the camera, here are some great places for tea time in Seksyen 17 to check out on the weekends with your friends!

1. Cafe Tujoh

Decked out with plants and greenery, Cafe Tujoh is the city’s answer to a natural escape. While unassuming from the outside, the interior is full of natural sunlight that is perfect for taking IG-worthy pictures. Patrons generally visit Cafe Tujoh for its extensive selection of coffee and bestsellers – Pandan Iced Latte and Shakerato. They also serve an all-day dinner for customers to enjoy in this beautiful vintage cafe.

2. Butter + Beans

Home to scrumptious Danish pastries and freshly baked goods, Butter and Beans is a cosy space that holds up to around 20pax. This means if you’re looking for a spot to chill, better head in early to secure a seat. The chalkboard walls are filled with quirky illustrations and their cakes taste better than they look. For early risers, this may be the spot to get to for a Sunday breakfast!

3. Hideaway Cafe

Helmed by a husband and wife duo, Hideaway’s main goal is to recreate a nostalgic and homely space where guests can feel like they’re here to sample their grandmother’s cake. The boutique cake prides itself on high-quality ingredients as well as maintaining a “no preservatives” policy. The Banana Pecan Raisin is known to be the cafe’s bestseller, so much so that guests are going nuts for it. Geddit?

4. Yum Cha Tea Bar

It’s almost impossible to get through a list of cafes without mentioning the nation’s favourite dessert beverage – Bubble Tea. At Yum Cha Tea Bar, BBT is their everything. The pastel drinks are dotted with succulent pearls and for an added dose of childhood nostalgia, their most popular drink happens to be the White Rabbit Milk Tea! Talk about a throwback.

5. Catcher in the Rye

More than just the title of a classic literature piece, Catcher in the Rye is a charming space exuding all kinds of grace and zen. Think gentle flavours like Earl Grey souffle and Chrysanthemum ice cream as it dances across your palate without being overbearingly sweet. The neutral-toned interior enjoys huge amounts of natural sunlight, just the perfect space for anyone in need of a little afternoon pick-me-up.

While most cafes pride themselves on good aesthetics, Muse Eatery doesn’t fall short with its Scandinavian-like interior, but definitely exceeds expectations with its dishes. At Muse Eatery, the key ingredient is Har Cheong- aka shrimp paste. The Har Cheong Chicken is a crowd-pleaser alongside its chicken chop and burgers. Perhaps it’s safe to say that prawns were their muse?

Cafes don’t necessarily have to be limited to desserts and coffee. At Grub, Ah Hong and his friends put a great deal in making sure you don’t leave hungry. The cosy cafe serves up affordable steaks and filling main courses like pasta, plus a grand dessert finale that usually comes in the form of an eye-drop fruit platter. You have to see it to believe it for this one, so don’t miss Grub the next time you’re cafe-hopping in the evening!

8. Good Blue Men

Though slightly obscure as it hides in a nondescript apartment, Good Blue Men is a feel-good cafe serving the most basic tea-time snack – sandwiches. Toasted charcoal breads are layered with Kam Heong Chicken and fresh greens for an added pop of colour. We don’t doubt the taste of them, but on a scale of 1 to 10 on how Instagrammable their food is, it’s definitely an 11.
