Food Trend: Steamed Rice

Steamed rice is quite popular to be served with curry chicken or spicy fried chicken for Malaysians. This is because the sticky texture makes it perfect with this combination. However, steamed rice is actually quite high in calories. Rice is a staple dish for most Asian countries. Rice is entirely composed of carbohydrates and should be taken in moderate amounts.

The carbohydrate will be broken down into simple sugar. In turn, the body uses it as a source of energy. However, that is only the case if rice is taken in sufficient and moderate amounts. Overconsumption of rice leads to the storage of the sugars as glycogen, and once the glycogen storage is full, this leads to the formation of body fat.

Benefits of Steamed Rice

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it is recommended that rice be consumed in moderation for the daily diet.

The steamed white rice helps boost the intake of zinc, the essential mineral which helps to support the immune system and enhance reproductive health. Besides, it also contains a significant amount of manganese which helps to activate the protein needed for cell function. Manganese also boosts collagen production in our body, which can act as an antioxidant.

Moreover, according to USDA National Nutrient Database, rice is rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, and copper that play vital roles in wound healing and boosts the immune system. In fact, rice is categorised as the least allergenic (least likely to cause allergic reactions).

Things to Consider

Remember always to consume steamed white rice in moderation to avoid the risk of diabetes. You can even try substituting it with brown rice to reduce the glucose and caloric intake.

It is also recommended to serve white rice with ingredients and dishes that are balanced. A good variety of meat and vegetables are essential to supply you with the recommended daily intake of nutrients.
