Dish of the Day: Curly Fries

Curly fries are french fries but in a twisting spiral shape. It is made from potatoes, and are cut using a specialised spiraliser or spiral scissors.

It is then deep-fried in high-temperature oil and is sometimes seasoned with sprinkle powders such as garlic powder, onion powder, pepper and salt, or some other flavoured powders. When served, it is commonly presented with dipping sauces. The most favoured dipping sauces for the fries are ketchup, ranch dressing and sour cream.

It is pretty common to find it in fast-food chain restaurants, food stations or outlets and restaurants. One may even find a frozen pack of fries, ready to be fried and prepared at home at the grocery or department stores.

It is almost as best selling as the regular french fries and criss cut fries.

The History

Though the exact inventor of the fries still remains unknown to everybody, it is believed that this heavenly fries has been existing since the 19th century. It is also believed to be a form of the industrial product. In 1985, a Washington company called Taterboy unveiled its so-called “innovative product”, which was the curly fries.

However, it was not until 1988 that the fries finally was introduced to the global market. A note worth mentioning is that the first-ever mass production of the well-known fries is by the famous frozen fried food company, Simplot.

Simplot changed the game of curly fries when they introduced it with their specially curated seasoning blend.

Ever since then, many factories and eateries have started to follow suit, gradually increasing and expanding the seasoning and sauce choices due to the increasingly higher demands and competitive market strategies from various food companies.

How Different Are Curly Fries?

On the contrary to regular french fries, curly fries usually has a golden-brown and crispier layer on the outside, and with a hint of spiciness.

When cooked, the fries are often heavily sprinkled with strongly flavoured seasonings such as garlic powder and onion powder. Also, it is widely well-received worldwide due to its spiral shape.
