Recipe: Marinated Herring

Although the marinated herring may not look all that appealing at first glance, don’t let it fool you. This Scandanavian and Nothern European dish is nutritional, flavourful, and all-around amazing.

Despite originating from Nothern Europe in Medieval times as a way to store and transport fish, pickled herrings can be found in cuisines as close as Russia and Ukraine, to as far as Hokkaido, Japan. This dish can be eaten in many forms—whether it be on its own, with potatoes, a hard-boiled egg, or in a fish salad. You can eat it however you like, whenever.

Herrings are also an excellent source for vitamin D3 and healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Hence, it’s a great meal choice if you’re more health-conscious. So, what are you waiting for? Try this quick and easy marinated herring recipe out for yourself!

Marinated Herring Recipe

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Place the herring into a container and cover with water and leave in the refrigerator to cool overnight. Make sure to change the water once during this process.
  2. In a glass measure, combine the vinegar and sugar and mix until all the sugar has dissolved. Add in the aquavit, allspice and juniper berries and mix.
  3. Drain the jarred herring and rinse in cold water. Pat the pieces dry with a paper towel and cut them into small bite-sized pieces.
  4. Layer half of the herring in the bottom of a glass bowl and top it off with half of the sliced red onions and dill. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Pour the marinade all over the fish.
  5. Leave in the refrigerator to cool for 4-6 hours, or overnight.
  6. To serve, drain the herring and remove the berries. Garnish with additional dill if so desired. Enjoy!
