The Perfect Match: Tasting the Sassy in Mango Lassi!

The phrase “mango lassi” is a common term in Little Indias across the globe. A popular drink found in just about any Indian restaurant, this sweet and creamy, slightly tart beverage is made with yogurt, fruit, sugar and usually made a little thinner with either water or fresh cow’s milk.

The thing that really makes this drink that little extra bit special is the pinch of cardamom seeds: just that little pinch of spice really adds an extra depth to the drink and a delicious flavour. Especially appetising with spicy food, mango lassi is also great for cooling off on a hot day and is usually served over ice or chilled.

Dave’s Deli

Dave’s Deli is a franchise specialising in deli-style western cuisine. We decided to pair this quintessentially Indian drink with some of their dishes to see how they’d fare together.

With ¼ Roast Chicken with Coleslaw & Mashed Potatoes: Quite self explanatory, this very hearty meal was really nicely complemented with the mango lassi, which in this case serves as both a drink and a yummy dessert. This is a great combination, and left us feeling really satisfied. Two thumbs up!

With Beef Lasagna: Layered with bechamel, meaty tomato sauce and cheese, this lasagna was perfect for satisfying our pasta cravings and then some. While the combination of the lasagna and mango lassi might be too rich for some, we really did enjoy the mix of these two items together (though it did become too creamy after a while, even for us!). We recommend keeping a glass of water close by if you’re keen on trying this out for yourself.

Sheesh Mahal

Sheesh Mahal specialises in classic Indian and Pakistani cuisines. We decided to take the traditional route and indulge in some delicious food from Sheesh Mahal with mango lassi.

With Tandoori Chicken: Tandoori chicken is such a traditional dish, and it went really deliciously with the mango lassi. The combination of the yogurt and spice marinate of the chicken paired perfectly with the slightly tart yogurt flavour of the lassi. Delicious!

With Prawn Masala: Infused with a mix of spices, these fresh prawns are cooked and sauteed in a dry, savoury gravy. This was definitely a very yummy combination: the mango lassi really worked well to soothe the palate after a spicy spoonful of this dish, and ended the dish with a sweet note.
